One of my organ playing students, Steve is in constant pain - he has been suffering from pancreatitis for the last couple of years. It’s quite dangerous, some people die because of this illness.
Steve has undergone multiple surgeries, spent enormous amount of time in hospitals, was forced to quit his job and lost many pounds of weight. With the next upcoming surgery there is hope on the horizon but for now he is in pain. Basically he is miserable in his stomach day and night. But… He creates music. I don’t know how but he manages to compose fugues, fantasias, preludes and other multiple pieces for the organ and even writes a blog about this. Maybe the process of creation takes his mind off his pain. So Steve is an example of someone who can create despite of pain. Speaking of which… Today I was having a headache and didn’t want to spend time at the computer so I went to the gym and did some light walking on the treadmill. Interestingly, the headache subsided to the point that I was even able to do some workout with the machines. So when I’m writing these words, my head is no longer in pain but I can still feel some kind of heaviness. Luckily, most of us don’t suffer severe pain all the time like Steve. But what if we do? Could we still find a way to create?
